How to choose your flight school: Taking a demo flight

How do you find the right flight school for you? Everybody is different and learns different than others. In this post I will give you some advice of how to find out if you like a prospective flight school or not.

Call the flight school and arrange for a demo or introductory flight lesson!

What happens on a demo flight?

They typically consist of  two parts. In the first part the flight instructor will sit down with you and explain the controls of the airplane or helicopter to you. They will also go over some basic aerodynamics so you get a very basic understanding on how an airplane or helicopter works and what to expect when you manipulate the controls of an aircraft for the first time.

After that they will walk out to the aircraft with you. They might do a short pre-flight inspection together with you. There you will get a first idea of how the controls actually work.

After the preflight you will get into the aircraft with the flight instructor. They will show and talk through the startup procedure, then take off. During that time you are on the controls but the instructor will be on the controls as well. Once you are airborne you get to fly the helicopter or airplane by yourself.

You’ll experience how it is to fly an aircraft, get a feeling for how it reacts to your inputs and fly around the local area for a while. Then you fly back to the airport, possibly doing a couple landings.

In the helicopter, you get to the part where you will hover the helicopter. One of the most exciting things to do and learn.

The length of the flight is usually somewhere between 20 and 60 minutes, depending on if you fly a helicopter, an airplane, or maybe purchasing some additional time.

The benefits of a demo flight

The great thing doing a demo flight is, that it is close to an actual flight lesson. You get to do some ground training and some time in the aircraft flying. You also get a feeling of the atmosphere of the flight school. Is it a small flight school where you get a more personal flight training, or a big flight school where the training follows a very strict syllabus. Do you get to fly with the flight instructor you will get training from later on, or are there many flight instructors?

Since everybody likes different scenarios, you get to choose what you like best.

You also get the opportunity to ask questions about the flight training, the availability of the aircraft, the amount of students you are sharing the aircraft with and billing. Do you have to pay a lump sum in advance or do you pay as you go?

You should keep all these things in mind, even write down questions ahead of time and get the answers then.

Hopefully this post answered some of your questions about how a demo flight works.

Aerial Photography – Photo flights in a helicopter

What are Photo Flights and why not use a drone?

A photo flight is a flight in a helicopter or airplane with a photographer on board, taking pictures of properties, events, construction sites or other projects. So why not just use a drone? That seems to be just so much easier, right?

Well, a drone is very lightweight, and can stay in the air only for a limited amount of time. Winds can be challenging for a drone because of its weight. There are also restrictions on what you can do with a drone. You cannot operate above a certain altitude without FAA approval, and you cannot operate close to certain airports.

A helicopter or airplane is able to stay in the air for hours, if needed. An aircraft can cover a way bigger area and give the photographer better flexibility.

There are specific applications where a drone makes way more sense than a helicopter or airplane. Especially if you are operating close to the ground. So both have their advantages and disadvantages.

How does a photo flight typically work?

We typically start with a ground briefing with the photographer and the pilot. This is to make sure both know exactly what is expected and what is of importance to the photographer or camera man and the project. This is of even more importance if a video or movie is shot.

It will help keep the cost down, since we want to keep the time that we are in the helicopter actually flying as focused and short as possible. Also important is the safety briefing. No loose objects in the aircraft. We try to fulfill the needs of the photographer but it is of the highest importance that the flight is safe.

What projects have we done in the past?

We have worked on film and photo projects including Music Videos, Vehicle promotion videos and lots of photography projects. Some of those include Vineyards, buildings, marathons, crop fields, construction sites and more.

Wine tasting in a helicopter

The Oregon wine country is getting known worldwide for it’s great Pinot Noirs, Chardonnays and other wines. Yamhill County, the heart of Oregon wine country where  wine growers started their first vineyards on the Dundee Hills, is home of more than 200 vineyards!

The region, with tasting rooms in Newberg, Dundee, Carlton and right in the middle, McMinnville has everything a wine connoisseur can imagine. Great restaurants, hotels, beautiful Bed & Breakfasts, lots of activities and of course wineries for every taste.

With the wine season starting on memorial day what better to do than get around a few vineyards, taste some of the wines, soak in the sun and views from the tasting rooms and enjoy life.

Getting around wine country can be time consuming. There is one way, though, to move it up a notch and not worry about traffic. Get picked up in either Portland downtown, Salem or McMinnville by a helicopter! Get in, relax, enjoy breath taking views of the Willamette Valley, the rolling hills and rivers while your helicopter pilot flies you from tasting room to tasting room.

He will explain some of the history of the area to you as well as pointing out interesting facts and scenic spots to you while you overfly the Willamette Valley wine regions.

There is no better way to explore vineyards like Stoller Family Estates, Sokol Blosser, Vista Hills, Domaine Serene, Domaine Drouhin, Winderlea, Alexana, Archery Summit, Hawks View, Methven Family Vineyards, The Dukes Family and a lot more, than in a helicopter. All those vineyards can be overflown in the helicopter in about 30 minutes. Trying to see all those driving on the roads will take you days.

Helicopter Proposal Flight

Propose on a Helicopter RideProposing to your future bride should be a special moment. We had quite a few customers that chose to propose to their girlfriend using our helicopter services.

There are a lot of options and there are always new ideas we can work on with you. A couple options we have done in the past were:

Propose during a flight in the helicopter

We will take you up on a helicopter scenic flight and show you the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. It could be just a short ride around the Willamette Valley and it’s wineries or something longer to Mt. St. Helens, over Portland, the Columbia River Gorge, or over the Pacific Coast.

Our aircrafts have the best active noise reduction technology headsets. You can talk to your fiancée to be just like you do on the phone. We’ll even play some music in the background.

Once we are over your favorite spot you can pull out the ring and propose. How could she not say “yes” at that point?

Proposing on a quiet, secluded ridge or island

We are able to land during a scenic tour to give you the time to propose in private to your girlfriend and future fiancée. Take the love of your life up on a helicopter scenic tour. We land on a river island, during the tour. You will get off the helicopter and propose. We will even throw in a bottle of sparkling wine for you to celebrate that she said “yes”.

Helicopter picnic or romantic lunch with a beautiful view

Another option is to have us stop for a picnic. Have a romantic picnic on a river beach, or at a romantic winery with a beautiful view over the Willamette Valley.

There are probably thousands more options and we are happy to include your ideas and make it even more special with your personal touch.

Look at some pictures of a couple helicopter proposal flights we did in the past.

Heli-Expo 2014 in Anaheim

This year we decided to attend the Heli-Expo in Anaheim, CA. We booked our tickets and hotel about a month before the event and were excited to go to California and get some sun, leaving the wet and nasty Oregon winter weather for a few days.

When we arrived in Los Angeles we took our shuttle to the hotel and after checking in decided to wander around to check out the surroundings. After grabbing some lunch we found out that the Convention Center was only about a 10 minute walk away from our hotel.

Our schedule began with some courses that started actually one day before the convention opened its doors so to attend those we walked over to the Convention Center. Almost nobody was there other than some of the exibitors which were finishing setting up their booths.

We also decided to do the rotor safety challenge and attend some of the safety courses like “Autorotational Success”, “CFIT: Avoiding the Unexpected Sudden Stop” or “Safety Management Systems for Small-Fleet or Private Operators”. There were a lot more courses and we attended quite a few and completed the safety challenge and got our certificates.

Another forum that we attended was the “Meet the Regulators” where you could ask questions to the FAA and they commented on some of the newest regulations like the new HEMS rule that affects almost all helicopter companies. It was interesting to hear how controversial that topic is.

Finally we also explored the exhibition floor with a lot of helicopter companies showing off their equipment. From cleaning supplies, flight simulators, instruments all the way up to huge helicopters, there was pretty much nothing left out.

One of the most interesting things to look at was the new Bell 505 Jetranger X and the Cabri G2. We saw the Cabri a couple months ago so we were familiar with it and were more interested in the Jetranger 505 X. It is a very beautiful new design which uses some of the parts from the older models like the rotorblades.

A big part of the helicopter is new though, like the structural part, the flat floor cabin and the turbine. The most remarkable thing about it is definitely the open cockpit. It reminded me a little bit of the Airbus Helicopters EC120 setup. It is possible to remove the seats and floor which then reveals attachment holes where you can secure cargo or other equipment.

It is easy to get in and out. I was sitting in the back with two other adults and there was still some room left. So it is a full 5 person setup. I just hope it will be available for a suitable price in a couple years. Most likely it will be available in 2016.

After four days of intense helicopter courses and exhibitions we were looking forward to sleeping in our own beds again. Here are now some photo impressions from the Heli-Expo 2014.

Wedding exit in a helicopter and photo flight over Portland

A couple days ago we were able to play a big part in someone’s life. A couple booked us for the grand exit at their wedding. After getting the required permissions we landed at a venue in downtown Oregon City with our helicopter and picked up the bride and groom to fly them into the Portland Downtown Helipad.

The weather wasn’t nice but luckily it was good enough to fly. Since the wedding ended at 10:15pm that night we took off at the airport at 10:00 and headed to the venue. As we aproached the landing zone the crowd cheered and we landed in a grass area, helped the bride and groom into the helicopter and flew off.

It was a beautiful night, flying over the citylights over Portland. After we dropped off the freshly married couple we took Marc from Moving Picture Weddings on board to get a few shots of the city and take some footage for the couple.

Thank you to Colette and Joe for the good time and thank you to Marc for sharing the pictures with us.

Konect Aviation’s new Robinson R44 helicopter arrived

After a couple months of paperwork we finally got our new helicopter on our ramp. It has been imported back into the US. It was stationed in Canada for the last few years, but now it is flying in McMinnville, OR. It is available for our customers for scenic tours and flight training or time building.

It is the same type of helicopter we used before with some differences that will make our customers experiences even greater.

The helicopter is very low time, almost new. It has a smaller instrument console than our last one for an even better view for the pilot and passengers. Another nice new feature are the so called bubble-windows. These windows are shaped like a bubble outwards, so that the passenger has more room and can see better and more of the beautiful Portland, northern Oregon and Willamette Valley area.

We still use top notch active noise cancelation headsets with bluetooth capabilities for a pleasant quiet flying experience and comfort.

If you are interested, stop by and have a look at our new aircraft.

How to choose your flight school: big school versus small school

If you are looking for a flight school you should carefully research and choose the school you want to do your flight training with. This is how we think about big and small flight schools.

Big flight school:
The bigger the school is the more impersonal it gets. It is likely you are just one of many students that go to that school every day. How can a big flight school know all their students needs? Are there always aircrafts available for every student? It can easily happen that a student that just began his training will be pushed back because another student needs that same aircraft to get a check ride done.

Small flight school:
A small school has the advantage of better being able to stay in touch with the student. The instructor can easily react to any changes or personal needs of the student, because there are fewer administrative steps to take and less other students to take care of.

Conclusion:
We think it is important to get a personal training that fits your needs and a flight school that is able to react to the students requirements. This is usually easier with smaller flight schools.

How to choose your flight school: busy airport versus small airport

If you are looking for a flight school you should carefully research and choose the school you want to do your flight training with. This is how we think about flight schools located at busy versus small airports.

Big and busy airport:
Flight training at big and busy airports is usually more expensive than at small airports. Usually busy airports have a control tower that manages the traffic at the airport. You cannot move your aircraft, leave or enter the airspace without getting permission from the tower. This means that you have to wait! Either you have to wait for other aircrafts to finish their operation, or if the tower is busy managing other traffic you are low on their priority list and have to wait.

Since you usually get charged by the minutes you fly the aircraft you end up paying money for sitting on the ramp or a taxiway with the engine running while doing nothing but wait.

Another factor is the weather. Especially if you fly a helicopter you might be able to do flight training even though the weather isn’t great. If it is good to fly, but not good enough, some airspace restrictions might apply. In that case only a limited amount of aircrafts is allowed to fly at the same time. You might end up not flying at all.

Small airport:
At a small airport you just don’t have enough traffic to slow down aircraft operations, and if it gets busier it usually gets resolved very quickly and it slows down. Usually you should be able to just get into your training aircraft and take off. This saves you time and money to focus on the important parts of your flight training.

Some people say that your radio communication skills are not as good as if they would if you train at a busy airport. Make sure there are busy airspaces in the area that you can fly to to easily learn these skills. This way you don’t have to multitask from the beginning of your training.

Conclusion:
It is likely that at busy airports you spend a lot of money just waiting to take off or enter an airspace. Small airports are usually quieter on the radio, making it necessary to fly to a different airport to experience a busy airport. The upside is, you can time your training to train your radio skills.

Tip:
While you study your books, open the liveatc.net webpage and listen to a busy airspace nearby to get used to listen to a tower. Choose an airport you can fly to, to get used to locations, taxiways and runways mentioned in the radio calls. It will help you getting used to it.

How to choose your flight school: part 141 versus part 61 flight school

When you are looking for a flight school you should carefully research and choose the school that best fits your flight training needs and goals. There are a lot of flight schools out there: big schools, small schools, some offer 141 flight training, others don’t have that kind of certificate. Some are at busy or big airports, others are located at smaller airports.

Everything has it’s pros and cons, and this is how we think about it.

Part 141 versus part 61 flight training:Part 141 - Part 61 flight school

Every flight instructor can do flight training under part 61. No certification is required for that. A part 61 flight school does not need to meet any requirements.

The flight training:
A part 141 flight school needs to have a syllabus outlining your flight training with several stages that are concluded by stage checks. This syllabus has been checked and signed off by the FAA to make sure it meets the standards required for the appropriate certificate.

A part 61 flight school doesn’t need that. They sometimes have one, but they don’t have to stick to it making your training less coordinated.

The ground training:
We think your ground classes are very important, because you learn what is important to be a safe pilot.

A part 141 school has to have an approved syllabus for the ground training as well. It usually consists of 2 stages, like the flight training. Usually you are not allowed to continue your flight training into stage 2 unless you finished your stage 1 ground training. These guidelines make sure you learn the topics required for each stage through your training.

Again, a part 61 school doesn’t need to have these guidelines or doesn’t need to follow a specific syllabus. This makes it possible for the flightschool to schedule a checkride because they think you can fly an aircraft while you are behind with the important ground training.

Conclusion:
A part 141 school has to apply for this status with the FAA. This is a complex application and a process that even includes certain needs for the classrooms, flight instructors, ground and flight training. Everything needs to be approved by the FAA to make sure your flight training will meet the high standards required to be a safe pilot.

A part 141 school is always able to enroll you in a part 61 course to tailor the training to your specific needs. This would be the case if you already have some experience.

Talk to your flight school in advance and make sure they understand your particular situation. This helps you to get the best flight training you deserve.
